Why did my organic traffic drop? Find where it fell in Search Console
Direct answer
To see why your organic traffic dropped, compare two equal periods in Search Console, such as the last 28 days against the 28 before, and split clicks by device, country, page and query. The slice that lost the most shows where to look. The data tells you where and how much, never why. Rankgaroo lets an AI pull both periods and rank the changes for you.

Do it by handAsk your AI insteadWorked exampleLimits to knowQuestionsRelated guidesYour clicks are lower than last month and you want a reason. Search Console will not give you one, but it can narrow the question a lot.
The trick is to stop staring at the total line. A drop in total clicks is usually one device, one country or a handful of pages, and each of those points to a different next step.
Do it by hand in Search Console
- In Search Console, choose the property and open Performance → Search results.
- Open the date filter, go to the Compare tab and pick the last 28 days against the previous period.
- Tick Total clicks and Total impressions and read both changes. If impressions fell and CTR held, fewer people saw you. If impressions held and clicks fell, fewer people clicked.
- Open the Devices tab, then the Countries tab. Each row shows both periods and the difference, so note which row lost the most clicks.
- Open the Pages tab, then the Queries tab, and sort by the difference column to list the biggest losers and gainers.
- Click the page that lost most to filter on it, then open Queries to see which of its searches slipped.
Compare view shows one dimension at a time and stops at 1,000 rows per table, so tying a page loss to the device or country behind it means re-filtering and re-reading each time.
Ask your AI instead
With Rankgaroo connected to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, paste a question like this:
Use my Search Console data for sc-domain:example.com. Compare 2026-09-25 to 2026-10-22 against 2026-08-28 to 2026-09-24. Did organic clicks drop? Break the change down by device, country, page and query, tell me which slices account for it, and list what the data cannot explain.
What the AI calls
gsc_search_analytics(siteUrl: "sc-domain:example.com", startDate: "2026-09-25", endDate: "2026-10-22", dimensions: ["device"])then the same call for 2026-08-28 to 2026-09-24. The AI subtracts the two to get the totals and the device split.
gsc_search_analytics(..., dimensions: ["country"], rowLimit: 1000)once per period. The AI diffs the countries.
gsc_search_analytics(..., dimensions: ["page"], rowLimit: 1000)and the same with ["query"], once per period. The AI ranks the biggest losses and gains.
Worked example
| Slice | Clicks before | Clicks now | Change | Impressions before | Impressions now |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All traffic | 15,940 | 14,820 | -7.0% | 861,300 | 912,400 |
| Mobile | 8,900 | 8,150 | -8.4% | 505,200 | 548,300 |
| Desktop | 6,700 | 6,370 | -4.9% | 339,600 | 351,900 |
| Country: usa (United States) | 4,630 | 4,210 | -9.1% | 241,900 | 268,400 |
| Country: deu (Germany) | 1,190 | 1,340 | +12.6% | 52,300 | 61,500 |
| Page: /templates/freelance-invoice-template/ | 2,310 | 1,860 | -19.5% | 118,400 | 131,900 |
| Page: /blog/how-to-track-billable-hours/ | 1,310 | 1,240 | -5.3% | 61,200 | 63,800 |
| Page: /de/vorlagen/rechnung-vorlage/ | 590 | 710 | +20.3% | 29,800 | 35,400 |
| Query: freelance invoice template | 31 | 18 | -41.9% | 1,960 | 2,140 |
| Query: acme app (brand) | 520 | 548 | +5.4% | 1,240 | 1,310 |
What the answer says
Total clicks fell 7.0% (15,940 to 14,820) while impressions rose 5.9%, so CTR slipped from 1.9% to 1.6%: the site was shown more but clicked less per view. Both devices fell, mobile by 750 clicks and desktop by 330. The United States lost 420 clicks, 38% of the net drop, while its impressions rose 11%. By page, the freelance invoice template lost 450 clicks while the German template page gained 120. Brand clicks held. The data cannot say why US CTR fell; the live results page for your top queries is the next thing to check.
Limits to know
- Search Console data trails by about 3 days, so end each period three days back to compare settled numbers.
- The numbers show where clicks fell, not why. Algorithm updates, seasonality, site changes, tracking changes and results-page layout changes are not in this data, so check them against dates yourself.
- Each call returns up to 1,000 rows and Search Console hides rare anonymized queries, so query rows will not add up to the site total.
- Rankgaroo has no comparison tool. The AI makes two calls per breakdown and does the subtraction, and Search Console only goes back about 16 months.
Questions
Why did my organic traffic drop suddenly?
A sudden drop in organic traffic usually comes from a ranking change, a fall in search demand, a technical problem such as indexing or tracking, or a change in how results are shown. Search Console can tell you which slice fell (device, country, page or query) but not the cause. Match the start date of the drop to anything you changed, then inspect the pages and queries that lost the most.
How do I compare two periods in Search Console?
Open Performance → Search results, click the date filter, choose the Compare tab and pick two ranges, for example the last 28 days against the previous period. The tables then show both periods and the difference. Use equal-length ranges, or the comparison will mislead you.
Is a 7% drop in clicks worth worrying about?
A drop of 5% to 10% over 28 days can be normal variation, so check the slices first. It becomes worth a look when impressions rose while CTR fell, as in the example above, when one device, country or group of pages lost far more than the total, or when the decline continues for several periods in a row.
Can Rankgaroo tell me if a Google update caused my drop?
No. Rankgaroo reads your Search Console and GA4 numbers and has no record of Google updates or of changes you made to your site. It can show when a drop started and which pages and queries took it, and you can line that up against a dated list of updates.
