Impressions up but clicks down in Search Console: what to check
Direct answer
When impressions rise and clicks fall in Search Console, split the change by device, page and query until you find where CTR dropped. Causes to test are ranking for broader queries, a lower average position, and a results page that now answers the question or shows features above your link. Only position and CTR are in the data; the rest needs a manual look. Rankgaroo lets an AI split two periods and flag matching slices.

Search Console records what happened to each query and page, not what the results page looked like. So the first job is to find where the gap opens, before guessing why.
Do it by hand in Search Console
- In Search Console, open Performance → Search results, use Compare for the last 28 days against the previous period, and tick all four metrics. Check whether the whole site shows the pattern or only part of it.
- Open the Devices tab and see whether one device holds the gap.
- Open the Queries tab and sort by the impressions difference. Look for rows where impressions rose, clicks fell and CTR dropped, and note the position change.
- Do the same on the Pages tab.
- For each suspect query, click + Add filter → Query, then open the Pages tab to see which URL carries those impressions.
- Search the query yourself on the device in question and look at what sits above your result.
Compare tables sort by one metric at a time, so finding rows where impressions rose and clicks fell takes scanning or an export.
Ask your AI instead
With Rankgaroo connected to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, paste a question like this:
For sc-domain:example.com, find where impressions went up and clicks went down between 2026-08-28 to 2026-09-24 and 2026-09-25 to 2026-10-22. Check by device, page and query. For each case show impressions, clicks, CTR and position before and after. Say which causes the data supports, such as a position loss, and list everything else as things I should check on the results page.
What the AI calls
gsc_search_analytics(siteUrl: "sc-domain:example.com", startDate: "2026-09-25", endDate: "2026-10-22", dimensions: ["device"])then the same call for 2026-08-28 to 2026-09-24.
gsc_search_analytics(..., dimensions: ["page"], rowLimit: 1000)and the same with ["query"], once per period. The AI keeps rows where impressions rose and clicks fell, and compares position.
Worked example
| Slice | Impressions (before to now) | Clicks (before to now) | CTR (before to now) | Position (before to now) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All pages, all queries | 861,300 → 912,400 | 15,940 → 14,820 | 1.9% → 1.6% | 19.1 → 18.4 |
| Country: United States | 241,900 → 268,400 | 4,630 → 4,210 | 1.9% → 1.6% | 13.9 → 14.6 |
| Mobile, all queries | 540,200 → 589,700 | 8,920 → 8,150 | 1.7% → 1.4% | 19.4 → 18.9 |
| Query: freelance invoice template | 1,720 → 2,140 | 31 → 18 | 1.8% → 0.8% | 8.6 → 9.4 |
| Query: time tracking spreadsheet | 1,180 → 1,460 | 14 → 9 | 1.2% → 0.6% | 12.1 → 12.8 |
| Query: best time tracker for freelancers | 880 → 1,310 | 7 → 3 | 0.8% → 0.2% | 17.9 → 16.5 |
| Page: /blog/hourly-rate-calculator/ | 3,380 → 3,950 | 96 → 61 | 2.8% → 1.5% | 6.4 → 7.1 |
| Page: /es/blog/como-cobrar-por-horas/ | 2,260 → 2,480 | 41 → 29 | 1.8% → 1.2% | 9.1 → 9.4 |
What the answer says
Site-wide this matches the pattern: impressions rose 5.9% while clicks fell 7.0% and CTR slid from 1.9% to 1.6%, even though average position improved from 19.1 to 18.4. The United States drives much of it: impressions +11%, clicks -9%. On mobile, impressions rose 9.2% while clicks fell 8.6% and position improved, so a position loss does not explain it. For three non-brand queries, impressions rose 24 to 49% and CTR fell 48 to 71%. Two of them slipped 0.7 to 0.8 places, which fits a lower rank, but "best time tracker for freelancers" gained 1.4 places and still lost clicks. The data cannot show whether the results page also changed.
Limits to know
- Search Console does not record what the results page looked like. Features above your link, AI answers and competitor changes cannot be seen here, so any cause in that direction is a thing to check, not a finding.
- Average position is a mean across all impressions of a row. It can stay flat while single queries move, so rely on query-level rows.
- Each call returns up to 1,000 rows, and Search Console leaves out rare anonymized queries, so a small query-level pattern can be missing.
- The AI does the comparison from two pulls. Rankgaroo has no stored history, so you cannot ask for a past period you did not pull.
Questions
Why are my impressions up but clicks down in Search Console?
Impressions can rise while clicks fall when your pages show for broader queries that earn a lower CTR, when your average position slips, or when the results page changes, for example with features or AI answers that take clicks. Search Console reports impressions, clicks, CTR and position, so it can confirm the first two causes. It cannot show the third.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks in Search Console?
They may for some queries, but the Performance report does not break out AI Overview appearances, so you cannot confirm it from the numbers. Search your top affected queries and look at what appears above your result.
Is it bad when impressions go up and CTR goes down?
Not always. Ranking for more broad queries adds impressions at a low CTR and lowers the average, even when your best queries are unchanged. It is a problem when CTR falls on queries you already ranked for, as with the "freelance invoice template" query in the example.
Can Rankgaroo tell me why my clicks fell?
Rankgaroo gives your AI app read access to the numbers. The AI can show where the gap opens and which cause fits the position and CTR data. It cannot see the live results page, so the rest is a list of things for you to check.
