Search Console guide

How to see which search queries a specific page ranks for in Search Console

Direct answer

To see the search queries for a specific page in Search Console, open Performance → Search results, add a Page filter with the exact URL, and read the Queries tab. Pick the exact-match option so similar paths don't mix in. The numbers then describe that page alone. Rankgaroo can fetch the same list when you paste a URL into an AI chat.

You published a page and want to know what it ranks for, not what you planned for it. The answer is in Search Console, one filter away.

The same view shows whether a page picked up queries you never targeted, and which ones get seen without getting clicked.

Do it by hand in Search Console

  1. Go to Performance → Search results and set the date range.
  2. Click + Add filter and choose Page.
  3. Pick the exact-match option, paste the full URL (with the trailing slash if your site uses it) and apply.
  4. Open the Queries tab and tick Impressions, CTR and Average position above the table.
  5. Sort by clicks or impressions. Note queries with many impressions and no clicks.
  6. Click Export if you want more rows to sort in a spreadsheet.

The Performance report shows one page at a time, so comparing the queries of several pages means repeating the filter and copying results into a sheet.

Ask your AI instead

With Rankgaroo connected to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, paste a question like this:

Prompt

Show me the search queries for https://example.com/templates/freelance-invoice-template/ in Search Console, 2026-09-25 to 2026-10-22. Sort by clicks and include impressions, CTR and position. Group rephrasings of the same search and tell me which queries get impressions but no clicks.

What the AI calls

  • gsc_search_analytics(siteUrl: "sc-domain:example.com", startDate: "2026-09-25", endDate: "2026-10-22", dimensions: ["query"], filters: [{dimension: "page", operator: "equals", expression: "https://example.com/templates/freelance-invoice-template/"}], rowLimit: 1000)

returns every named query for that URL. The AI groups the rephrasings.

  • gsc_search_analytics(..., dimensions: ["page"], filters: [{dimension: "page", operator: "equals", expression: "https://example.com/templates/freelance-invoice-template/"}])

for the page's own totals, so the AI can compare them with the sum of the named queries.

What the answer says

For this page Search Console reports 410 clicks and 21,800 impressions overall (1.9% CTR, position 8.6), yet its 84 named queries add up to only 118 clicks. Most of the named ones are rewordings of one search, "freelance invoice template", at positions 6.4 to 11.3. CTR varies a lot between them: "freelance invoice template pdf" gets 2.7%, while "freelance invoice template" gets 0.8% on 2,140 impressions. The two zero-click queries sit at positions 12.6 to 14.2, which may be neighbouring intents worth a section.

Limits to know

  • Search Console hides rare, anonymized queries. For the example page the named queries explain only 118 of 410 clicks, so most of its traffic has no query attached.
  • The filter matches the exact URL string. Trailing slashes, www, query strings and language folders count as different URLs.
  • Average position blends devices and countries. A page at 2.0 may be first on desktop and lower on mobile.
  • gsc_search_analytics returns at most 1,000 rows per call, which rarely matters for one page but does for a whole site section.

Questions

How do I see which keywords a page ranks for in Search Console?

Add a Page filter with the exact URL in Performance → Search results, then read the Queries tab. Only queries that produced at least one impression in your date range appear, so a brand new page may show little for a few days.

Why don't the queries add up to the page's total clicks?

Search Console withholds queries that very few people searched, to protect privacy, but their clicks still count in the page total. For the example page above the named queries explain 118 of 410 clicks.

Can I see queries for a whole section of a site instead of a single URL?

Yes. Use the contains option on the Page filter, with a folder such as /templates/, instead of the exact URL. The Queries tab then covers every page whose address contains that text.

Why does the same query show for more than one of my pages?

More than one URL can get impressions for a query, which is normal for brand searches and language versions. If two pages in the same language trade places, check whether they compete for the same topic.
