mcp-gsc alternative: Rankgaroo vs mcp-gsc

Quick answer

mcp-gsc is a popular open-source Search Console MCP server. It is MIT-licensed and runs on your own machine. Rankgaroo is hosted, so it works in Claude web, ChatGPT and other remote-MCP clients, with no Google Cloud project. mcp-gsc has more tools, including URL inspection and sitemap management. Rankgaroo's tool parameters were modeled on it. Rankgaroo fits when you want a hosted, read-only connection for Search Console and GA4; mcp-gsc fits when you want local control, more tools or code you can modify.

Key differences:

  • Rankgaroo is hosted; mcp-gsc runs on your machine.
  • Rankgaroo needs only a Google sign-in; mcp-gsc needs your own Google Cloud project or a service account key.
  • mcp-gsc has about 20 tools, including URL inspection and sitemap management; Rankgaroo has 5 read-only tools.

How Rankgaroo relates to mcp-gsc

We modeled Rankgaroo's tool parameters on mcp-gsc. If you have used its search analytics tools, the same dimensions and filters will feel familiar.

The two make different trade-offs. mcp-gsc gives you more tools and full control. Rankgaroo gives you a hosted connection, read-only scopes and GA4, with fewer tools.

When to pick Rankgaroo

  • You want Claude web or ChatGPT to read your data without installing anything.
  • You do not want to create a Google Cloud project or handle a JSON key.
  • You want read-only scopes, so no tool can submit sitemaps or change anything.
  • You need GA4 next to Search Console.

When to pick mcp-gsc

  • You want to read, fork or change the server code. It is MIT-licensed.
  • You want your data requests to run from your own machine with your own Google credentials.
  • You need URL inspection, batch inspection or sitemap submission from chat.
  • You use Cursor and want the bundled skills for weekly reports, cannibalization checks and indexing audits.

Questions

Is mcp-gsc free?

mcp-gsc is open source under the MIT license. Its GitHub repo has the current terms. The same author also runs a separate hosted product, Advanced GSC MCP.

Is mcp-gsc read-only?

No. It includes submit_sitemap and manage_sitemaps. The add_site, delete_site and delete_sitemap tools are off by default and turn on with GSC_ALLOW_DESTRUCTIVE=true. Its code requests the full webmasters scope.

Does mcp-gsc support GA4?

No. The open-source repo covers the Search Console API only. Rankgaroo covers both Search Console and GA4.

Does mcp-gsc work in claude.ai or ChatGPT?

Its README says the server runs locally and works in the Claude Desktop app, not the claude.ai browser interface. It lists Cursor, Codex CLI and Gemini CLI as other clients. An optional SSE or HTTP transport exists for advanced remote deployment.
